Monday Made It: Classroom Decor & More

Once again, I'm linking up with 4th Grade Frolics for another edition of Monday Made It

Since I am changing the colors of my classroom, I wanted to add a few cute decorations that would match the new theme. I made this R to be displayed behind my desk, or to hang outside my classroom door. I haven't quite made up my mind yet! Nonetheless, I'm excited to display this somewhere in my new first grade classroom!

This initial was pretty easy to make. I bought the giant R at a local craft store on sale for $10. I also purchased several sheets of scrapbook paper in my classroom colors and little letters to spell my last name.

To make the collage, I simply ripped the paper and used mod-podge to glue it to the letter.

Once the mod-podge had dried, I used a sharp X-Acto knife to cut away the extra paper.
*Disclaimer* I am pretty awful with the knife!

A little hot glue held the letters in place.

And, there you have it! My craft project is ready to be displayed!

Since school is just around the corner, I am working on project, after project to get my classroom ready! I knew that I would need another set of number posters to add to my calendar area.
I love, love, love ten frames and visual math, so I was sure to add ten frames to each number poster.
Since first graders learn how to tally, I also added a spot for tallies.
I can't wait to print these and hang them up!

What projects are you working on?

If you haven't already, take a look at this week's Monday Made It for some classroom inspiration!

Monday Made It: File Cabinet Rehab with Sass!

Since I'm going to be teaching firsties, I wanted to add color... lots of color! Color makes me... happy! As  I plan what will go into my future {and new} classroom, I wanted to create a show-stopping piece that people would say, "Where did you get that at!" and I would proudly respond, "I made it!"

So... I turned a boring old cabinet- that I scored for FREE- into a colorful, sassy, ready-for-firsties cabinet!

I'm linking up with 4th Grade Frolics for my first Monday Made It of the summer! What took me so long!?! Well, I was moving... and moving again... Oh, and I was in Vegas! But, I'm here now with lots of Monday Made Its to share!

I started my project with a boring brown metal cabinet. I loved the look of it and the many drawers, but it wasn't ready for my classroom!

I took the drawers out and added primer to get it ready for some vibrant spray paint!

And here are my color choices! The darker the color, the easier to paint with! The yellow was ridiculously hard to pain with! I had to paint layer, after layer, after layer... and it still ended up looking a bit odd. The blue was by far the easiest to work with! I am going to use the same paint for other craft projects!

I was so smart and didn't wear gloves... and ended up looking like this! I kinda liked the look! I still have some random bits of spray paint here and there... hmmmmm

After a top coat, the drawers were ready to go back in! I just loved it!! But... I wasn't done yet! Every teacher knows the details are what makes the best impression!

I found these pretty papers on sale that would match my classroom theme/ colors and look just perfectly as a finishing touch to my cabinet! I love the patterns! My favorite is the paper in the blue drawer.
 It says, "I love it!"

Ta Da! The final product!
I can't wait to get this sassy piece in my classroom!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Breakdown:

Cabinet- FREE
Spray Paint- $4 each x 7 = $28 (YIKES!)
Pretty Paper- $4
Flower- $3

Total = $35

Effort - Moderately Easy
Time - About 3 hours + drying time

Next week I will have some more fun craft projects to share! In the meantime, I hope you check out the other lovely creations on the Monday Made It link-up!

What Happens in Vegas... Ends Up on My Blog!

*Exhale* Oh, my! It has been quite the crazy last 6 weeks! My school year ended mid-June, and as soon as the school year was over, I packed-up my classroom and house, and moved about 4 hours from my home! Moving my classroom was pretty much like moving my house... or worse! I don't know about you all, but OH MY GOODNESS did I have a lot of stuff! I had a HUGE garage sale and sold what seemed like a million things!

I'm still not settled! I had to give-up my computer and purchase a new one. I am trying to get used to Windows 8. I can't handle it so far! My new computer is supposed to be awesome, but it is driving me a little crazy! The touch pad is overly sensitive. I thought I was going to throw my new computer out the window the first few days! I'm also navigate the new Word programs... Why did they have to go and change things on me!! Good thing I learn quickly! Windows 8 users... are you going insane? Or, have you adjusted?

Let's Get to the Vegas Adventures...

With all of this craziness going on, I was so very excited for my trip to the TPT conference in Vegas! I had made so many new friends since I began blogging a year ago and was so excited to FINALLY meet them! I met some of the sweetest people. I was so grateful to share stories with fellow bloggers, and so grateful that my new friends were accepting to my major shyness problem!

I stayed in Vegas for 5 days, which is a long time in Vegas standards. By day 5, I was exhausted after late nights, early mornings, and a ton of walking. I was a lucky-duck to be able to go to the conference with my good friend, Erin. She is a fellow first grade teacher and is starting a blog soon! She was definitely my partner in crime, and I was lucky to spend time with someone who wanted to go on the same adventures I wanted to go on.

I was able to attend a couple blogger meet-ups. I was an introvert in a sea of teachers! I was so timid to go up to my blogging idols, but when I finally conquered my nerves, I introduced myself to some wonderful people! I could not believe the kindness! So many of them told me, "Let me know if you need anything." What!?! These amazing teachers are willing to help ME!! I felt so blessed!

I met Deanna Jump from Mrs. Jump's Class...
My blogging idol Hope King from Second Grade Shenanigans...
Molly from Lucky to be in First....
Emily Hutchison from Curious Firsties (she is just the sweetest person!)

To top off the trip, I was able to have dinner with these lovely teachers (and many more who are not pictured).

Jenny from Luckeyfrog's Lilypad (another sweetheart)...
Krystal from Good Enough Teacher...
and Lory from Lory's Page

The conference was wonderful and I left ready to create more resources for my future firsties! I have so many ideas... I'm not sure which to start with first!!

I met so many wonderful people that I didn't snap photos of! I wish I would've snapped a photo of every wonderful person I met!!

I'm linking up with A Burst of First to share what happened in Vegas! Several other bloggers linked-up, so take a look!

Did you attend the TPT conference in Vegas? I'd love to see your photos! Leave the link in the comments below :-)
